How to Properly Photograph Your Fish for the Classic
A collaboration with the Gold Coast Sportfishing Club & Paul Burt from Step Outside
Every year, the Gold Coast Flathead Classic welcomes hundreds of anglers, all chasing that dream catch. With our catch-and-release format, photos are the proof that makes the competition run smoothly and keeps the spirit of fair play alive.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with Paul Burt from Step Outside to bring you the essential guide on how to properly photograph your fish for the Classic.
Why the Photo Matters
Your photo is more than just a memory — it’s the official record of your catch. A clear, well-framed image ensures your entry is counted, speeds up the verification process, and helps highlight the incredible fishing stories that unfold throughout the tournament.
Top Tips from Jason & Paul
1. Position is Everything
Place your fish flat on the official brag mat. The nose must be touching the zero end, with the entire fish (especially the tail) visible.
2. Overhead is Best
Hold your phone directly above the fish, not at an angle. This guarantees an accurate length reading and avoids disputes.
3. Light it Right
Natural daylight works best. If fishing at dawn, dusk, or in low light, use your flash — but avoid casting shadows over the brag mat.
4. Be Quick and Kind
Snap your photo promptly and release your fish safely back into the water. The Classic is built on sustainability, and every careful release helps protect our fishery.
5. Double-Check Before You Let Go
Review your photo to confirm the length is clear and the fish is fully visible on the mat. A blurry or incomplete shot may not count.
A Moment Worth Capturing
As Paul Burt says, “Every fish tells a story — and the photo is how we share it.” By taking that extra care with your shots, you’re not only helping the judges but also creating memories you’ll look back on long after the Classic ends.
So get your brag mats ready, line up your camera, and make sure your photos do justice to the fish and the moment.
This Flathead Classic, let’s capture the action, the adventure, and the community spirit — one perfect photo at a time.
